“People live to hear positive stories of connection, and friendship and family. Most people are very good…”

Responder: James Carey
Name of Company: Attic Studios
Name of Show: Mi Casa Su Casa or How to Get 175 Roommates (An Airbnb Host Tells All)

1. Why should anybody see your show?
Aside the fact it is a funny, heart-warming show, It is all true. I have been an Airbnb Host for 8 years and these are all real people, real situations and real outcomes of all the things that I talk about. It is really about family, connection and the wonder of people from all over the world.

2. Why Atlanta?
I grew up in Valdosta. I still have family in Georgia. And this will be my second time at Atlanta Fringe and I like the vibe and the people.

3. What inspired you to create this?
This was my wife’s idea. I had been touring another play around the world for about 4 years and she thought it was time for new material. So she pressured me to consider this idea and helped me write it. And it has been very successful.

4. What’s your process for creating and rehearsing something like this?
Since this all true it is just a choice of what stories you want to tell for a family audience. Since all my shows are one man shows, I don’t sit down and write it out. I create a framework of what stories I want to include, and then actually write standing up and speaking out loud possible lines and record them live. I play it back and take what sounds good. After I have a good rough draft, I try it out for friends or in small venues in LA.

5. What have you learned from working on your show so far?
People live to hear positive stories of connection, and friendship and family. How most people are very good and the effect that good people can have on you and you on them.

6. Tyler Perry, Jane Fonda, Killer Mike and Donald Glover roll up at your show. There is one ticket left. Who gets it?
Tyler Perry because he might actually produce it as a film.

7. Atlanta’s foodie scene is really on point these days. What does your show taste like? (Bonus points if you can name-check an ATL restaurant.)
I grew up in the South so I always want South style cooking when I come back. Shrimp and Grits is one of my favorites. [Ed note: PREACH!] Order that anytime. I like the new take on Southern style cooking that is happening across the South. There is a great upscale Atlanta restaurant in Mid-Town that I like to go to when I am here. I know where it is but do not recall the name.

8. Fringes are the place to really push the boundaries so we gotta ask: would you want your parents in the front row or would you tell them, “Maybe skip this one, guys…”?
No, they could be in the front row for sure. But they have to pay like everyone else. This touring stuff is expensive!

9. Will your show save mankind?
No, but it shows there is much less difference between people than our current leaders would like us to think. It is positive, upbeat, and heart-warming.

10. Oh boy! After your first show a genie pops out of a bottle and offers you a choice – world peace or your show enjoying a ten-year run on Broadway. What shall it be?
The 10 year run. Sorry, I am that shallow.

11. Describe your show in three words.
Funny, True, Award-winning!
