36 Views: a Story of Tits and Poetry

Billie Sainwood

Atlanta

Billie Sainwood's 36 Views: a Story of Tits and Poetry is a walk through the journey of the changing trans body through the lens of a potent symbol of womanhood: tits. Taking inspiration from artists like Henri Riviere and Hokusai, this work is a non-linear exploration of how the body can flit and out of harmony with the soul.

The Buzz Intro Interview

Billie Sainwood

1. Why should people see your show?

36 Views is a journey through art, bodies, joy, shame, and the inherent beauty of tits. If you like paintings, poetry, and a nice pair of breasts, come out and see 36 Views.

2. What about festivals intrigues you? And why the Atlanta Fringe?

Festivals have a collective creative energy to them that's intoxicating. I want to see what that energy does to the vibrant, irreverent, gorgeous art and performance scene we have here in Atlanta.

3. What inspired you to create this?

The Japanese Ukiyo-e artist Hokusai and the French post-impressionist painter Henri Riviere both have projects in their oeuvre showing 36 Views of a meaningful landmark (Mt. Fuji and the Eiffel Tower respectively). These breathtaking works show the paradoxically ever-changing and omnipresent aspects of these "views" in their lives. They made me think of a landmark of my trans experience: my tits. I was suddenly inspired to show the diversity and consistent ways my tits have shown up for me as shame, as secret, as celebration, to better celebrate the homeland of my body.
