Absolutely Make Eye Contact: Myths & Jokes about “The Spectrum”

Simon Huebner

Chamblee

"Absolutely Make Eye Contact: Myths and Jokes about 'The Spectrum'" sums up Simon Huebner's comedy sensibilities. Simon was delusional enough to think he'd be the first person who publicly found the humor in Asperger's over a decade ago. His jokes have continuously attempted to say that what we think of as "the spectrum" is not as different as what we're used to assuming. While laughter is the main goal of the show, what makes "Absolutely Make Eye Contact" unique is building a connection with an audience, which was sorely lacking the first time Simon googled his own condition.

The Buzz Intro Interview

1. Why should people see your show?

If you've ever felt misunderstood and fit out, you'll be welcome here. If you want to better understand family or friends who are on "the spectrum, " you'll be welcome here. If you've ever related to one of my jokes saying we're more similar than we are different, you'll be welcome here. If all you know about this subject came from TV and movies, you'll be welcome here. If you saw the title "Absolutely Make Eye Contact" and thought it sounded interesting, you'll be welcome here.

2. What about festivals intrigues you? And why the Atlanta Fringe?

I first heard about Atlanta Fringe from a comic who performed in it last year, and thought it would be a great outlet for the types of jokes I wanted to tell, about a specific topic. I look forward to seeing the other performers' shows and supporting them.

3. What inspired you to create this?

When I first took standup seriously over a decade ago, I wanted to talk about Asperger's and "the spectrum" in a way that was not confining, or "staying in my lane, " while also being a well-rounded adult who could read a room. This is something I barely witnessed whether on or off stage. I always knew I had more "puzzle pieces" to talk about on stage. When I heard that Atlanta had a Fringe Fest, I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to combine making an audience laugh while sharing my personal knowledge about something that gets wildly misunderstood by the general public. "Absolutely Make Eye Contact" also is inspired by my professional knowledge gained from working for a therapist whose speciality is learning disabilities who I saw as a kid due to failing a book report the same year I won a spelling bee. I guarantee you'll be laughing throughout the whole show and that my absolutes aren't as rigid as they once had been.
