Based on a Drew Story

Andrew Autry

Atlanta, Ga

Drew is twenty, shy, awkward, and a virgin. Encouraged by his best friend Sadie, he sets out to change his circumstances and find connection but his journey spirals as he navigates life, love, and loss in the modern queer experience. Inspired by the real-life experiences of the writer Andrew Autry, this play offers a raw, unflinching look at love and heartbreak. It doesn’t shy away from the highs and lows of the queer experience, delivering moments of humor, heart, and vulnerability, just like life itself.

The Buzz Intro Interview

Andrew Autry

1. Why should people see your show?

People should see Based on a Drew Story because it offers a deeply personal and brutally honest look at queer life, grief, and self-discovery in the modern South. It’s a story that doesn’t just explore being gay—it captures the aching loneliness, the messy hookups, the desperate search for connection, and the unrelenting grief that shapes someone’s coming-of-age.

2. What about festivals intrigues you? And why the Atlanta Fringe?

Festivals like the Atlanta Fringe intrigue me because they create space for unconventional, bold, and experimental work that might otherwise struggle to find a platform. Traditional theatre can sometimes be risk-averse, but festivals embrace innovation, allowing unique voices and stories to thrive without the constraints of commercial viability. It’s an opportunity for artists to take creative risks and push boundaries.

I chose the Atlanta Fringe because I live here, and I want to be part of the city's growing independent theatre scene. Atlanta has a vibrant arts community that fosters fresh, daring work, and the Fringe Festival is a perfect example of that. It’s a place where new voices can be heard, and stories that might not fit into mainstream theatre can find an audience.

3. What inspired you to create this?

Going through an eventful year of my life which inspired me to want to turn my experiences into art.
