Birdseye McPherson’s Last Ride

Sean O’Brien

Canton, NY

The very friendly, very funny Ghost of James Birdseye McPherson (1828-1864) takes the stage and —with arts comedic and improvisational— shares his tales of doomed love, public transportation, Coca-Cola, Lenox Square Mall and other tomfoolery.

Birdseye was a Major General in the United States Army shot in the back by rebels during the Battle of Atlanta.

After gently haunting ATL for decades, he is ready to ask a few pointed questions, offer a couple keen observations, and proposes an innovative plan for Stone Mountain

The Buzz Intro Interview

Sean O’Brien, Writer/Performer

1. Why should people see your show?

The audience will have fun; they will laugh; as every performance is different they will be part of a one-time-only, unique experience.

2. What about festivals intrigues you? And why the Atlanta Fringe?

On a break from a research trip in 2000, I visited the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The entire city was electric: street performers, wild puppet shows, music and theater absolutely everywhere; (I got to see an actual, real-life flea circus whose ringleader was a biologist from Cambridge, MA!) I love all art and all theater, but this was something really special.

I think there are elements in the story of this man who died to free millions of Americans that could appear to all kinds of audiences, but perhaps especially in East Atlanta, the place where he died.

Even though I now live on the Canadian border, I love my hometown; I love its diversity; and I am so absolutely chuffed to get to celebrate Atlanta theater by attending as many other Fringe shows as I can, and giving my absolute all for every second I am on stage.

3. What inspired you to create this?

Making new things is how I work to improve myself as an artist, teacher, and person.

I believe the Comedic Arts have an important role to play in both resisting fascism and building community.
