The Buzz Intro Interview

Diana Brown

1. Why should people see your show?

Five/5ths provides all the variety, innovation, surprise, high-energy, fast pace, and excitement of a fringe festival in one single evening. Plus, every dollar supports the Fringe festival directly and enables us to provide this essential platform for independent performing artists to produce and develop their work and build community with one another. That's a great cause!

2. What about festivals intrigues you? And why the Atlanta Fringe?

Fringes are incredible festivals, completely unlike any other; I call it "trench artfare" because all the artists, audiences, and staff are all trying to see as many shows as they can, meet as many people as they can, and get to as much as possible, and no one can possibly do everything, so there's an incredible bonding experience that happens. You bond with each other over shows you've seen and the shows you've missed. And there's so much it's overwhelming, but the overwhelming is joyful and exciting and not just frustrating and paralyzing. Your cup runneth over! As for why Atlanta Fringe, well, I live in Atlanta and we didn't have one. That really ground my gears. Thankfully a lot of other people thought we should have one too, so we got a team together, and now we've been producing this joyful trench artfare experience for 14 years!

3. What inspired you to create this?

I thought it sounded like such a blast, to produce, to perform in, AND to watch. Not every show can do all three! I thought it sounded like a great way to demonstrate all the wonder and wildness of a fringe in one event. I thought we needed cash money and should put on a fundraiser, and this one seemed like a cool one to do. So much inspiration!
