Lipsync Diaries of a Gay Boy

Robbie Harrison

Portland, ME

Lipsync Diaries of a Gay Boy is a coming out story and showcase of Performer's life at 14, a year spent holed up in the family computer room, recording dozens of lip sync videos to "Defying Gravity." Performer had a fervor to create, but in response to what? Is there a connection to be made between Performer’s commitment to his lip sync ritual and the ways of the man behind the self-made barricade—Performer's father, sipping apple cider in the kitchen? "Lipsync" is a story of being a gay boy and daring to pay attention to the man behind the curtain.

The Buzz Intro Interview

Robbie Harrison - Writer and Performer

1. Why should people see your show?

You'll learn a lot about me. The show is a blend of showcase and storytelling. And it is an origin story. It finds me at 2005, a year in my life when my identity was beginning to take shape. I was 14, beginning eighth grade in central Massachusetts. I had just started telling some close friends that I was gay. This new musical called "Wicked" was just beginning to catch on.

2. What about festivals intrigues you? And why the Atlanta Fringe?

I always find Fringe festival shows the most memorable. I've never been to the Atlanta Fringe, but my sister lives here and I have housing :)

3. What inspired you to create this?

I have dozens of lip sync videos that I made in the mid-aughts and I've always wanted to dig into them to see what story they were telling. This show is the best explanation I have so far.
