The Curious Revelations and Astounding Insights of the Great Shamé

Tozy Magic

Reno

The Great Shamé is an absurd illusionist who will make you cower in bewilderment—and she has taken hold of the mind of our beloved magician, Tozy. Traditional magic meets modern clown... with a dash of drag and puppetry. A fantastical, raunchy, and poignant experience that is as delightful as it is astounding.
“Terrific... filled with self-discovery and revelations.”—Reno Arts News

The Buzz Intro Interview

Tozy / performer, producer & co-deviser

1. Why should people see your show?

Because we all wrestle with shame, but rarely do we get to laugh at it. My show takes something small but heavy—a mistake—and amplifies it to the point of absurdity. It’s theatrical, ridiculous, and strangely cathartic. If you’ve ever obsessed over something embarrassing you did years ago, this show is for you. It’s a chance to step into a world where shame isn’t something to hide from—it’s something to play with, challenge, and maybe even accept.
When I finally looked at the shame that had been with me through growing up religious, then giving up religion, then becoming a stripper, and beyond, I realized she is an absurd illusionist. She makes things look bigger than they really are, and plants silly ideas in my mind. That is what I kept coming back to as I created Shamé. Then I saw that she had control of a mistake I made, which was squirming inside my mind like a worm, refusing to leave. Just like that, Mr. Ow the worm was born.
My show is also unique in that it is a blend of traditional magic and modern clown, and many people have appreciated it for that aspect alone.

2. What about festivals intrigues you? And why the Atlanta Fringe?

I love the idea of being surrounded by other performers that are experimenting, pushing boundaries, and being bold & silly onstage. I want to take it all in, be inspired, and make connections. Plus, I love the idea of sharing my work with audiences who are open to discovery, and embrace the weird. Atlanta has such a rich cultural history and a vibrant, ever-evolving arts scene. It’s a city buzzing with creativity, and I’m thrilled to get to bring my show there, for my very first fringe festival!

3. What inspired you to create this?

When I started studying magic six years ago, I was inspired by a couple magicians in particular who blend clowning and magic. I loved their ability to play with the audience and be ridiculous, while also doing incredible feats of wonder. I took a couple clown workshops, and then joined an improv clown team at its inception. About two years ago we started working with Natasha Mercado as our coach. Her approach to modern clowning helped us grow as performers, have fun, and create unique pieces. So, when I started working on this show, I hired Natasha as director and co-diviser. She has helped me develop the characters, the storyline, and the ways I play with the audience. I wanted to bring the truths I see in the world onto the stage, and it's been an amazing journey so far.
