Responder: Sarah Stokes, Co-Director and Choreographer
Name of Company: Atlanta Dance Collective
Name of Show: IMPRINT

1. Why should anybody see your show?
IMPRINT is a reflection on changes in life, inspired by stories from multiple women I connected with for this project. The stories derived from some of the closest relationships in these women’s lives- familial, close friendships. The poetry created from these stories, and the movement research deal with themes that are very relatable to multiple experiences and walks of life, and weave a vibrant picture of the many factors that make up who we become. The movement is extremely athletic, exhaustive, and unique. Come see because you can and you should!

2. Why Atlanta?
This is ATLANTA Dance Collective’s home. We love Atlanta!

3. What inspired you to create this?
Changes in my own life, dealing with letting go of people or ideals and embracing change, embracing the new. My sister Hannah Stokes and her poetry, her words directly inspired a large portion of the movement in the piece. And the dancers as well, their ingenuity, artistic input, and creativity are truly inspiring- you’ll see they’re some pretty incredible people!

4. What’s your process for creating and rehearsing something like this?
Creating a work like this for me begins with the initial idea or feel, the question I want to research. I experiment with improvisational movement around the idea, and create a phrase that gets manipulated and broken apart by both myself and the dance artists using tasks coming from the stories/ideas/concepts I am researching. My creative process is collaborative and unique to the artists I am working with, we create together.

5. What have you learned from working on your show so far?
Patience with myself, whether it be waiting for the idea that feels right, or not getting frustrated when I get bored with my own work. Just learning to be patient in it all.

6. Tyler Perry, Jane Fonda, Killer Mike and Donald Glover roll up at your show. There is one ticket left. Who gets it?
Jane Fonda, but really any of them would be amazing!

7. Atlanta’s foodie scene is really on point these days. What does your show taste like? (Bonus points if you can name-check an ATL restaurant.)
Southwest salad from Chopt, a ton of different ingredients and flavors all wrapped up into one huge and delicious salad.

8. Fringes are the place to really push the boundaries so we gotta ask: would you want your parents in the front row or would you tell them, “Maybe skip this one, guys…”?
Front row I guess, why not? My parents will probably come and see anything!

9. Will your show save mankind?
Probably not, but who knows?

10. Oh boy! After your first show a genie pops out of a bottle and offers you a choice – world peace or your show enjoying a ten-year run on Broadway. What shall it be?
I mean, I have to say world peace…

11. Describe your show in three words.
Words and movement.
