“The amount of people that reach out to us after every episode, expressing their appreciation, let’s us know that our show is changing lives.”
Responder: Brodie & C. Lane, Co-Founders, Co-Hosts
Name of Company: Open Canvas Live
Name of Show: Open Canvas Live
- Why should people see your show?
Brodie: why do you eat? Why do you sleep? Why do people have sex? Cause all of those things give you life! Our show will give you LIFE!
C.Lane: to piggy back on what Brodie said. Also, it’s a great time of truth, humor, knowledge, and a safe space for vulnerability. Come get your life with Open Canvas!
- What about festivals intrigues you? Any why the Atlanta Fringe?
Brodie: this is a big growing step for our podcast. This will be our first festival run AND the first time that we’ll be running the show with a live studio audience. Growth can be scary, cause the uncertainty it can bring, but it’s also a beautiful thing, watching something you created grow into something bigger.
- What inspired you to create this?
C.Lane: Well Brodie reached out to me with an idea for a podcast about reaching out. What’s funny is that I too was trying to think of a way to connect or reach out to people, so when he approached me, I was all in, like SIGN ME UP!
- This year ain’t normal and there’s no sense pretending it is. How has Covid affected what you’re doing for this festival?
C.Lane: well because we started during Covid, it operates on a virtual platform, so of anything, the Fringe is the first time we’ll have a live, in-studio audience!
Brodie : Not so much dreams, but I did have expectations. When we would have special guests, for some, I placed expectations on them, thinking they would navigate the show to my desire, which was kind of narrow-minded of me. Sure, as a show, we have parameters set, but we all approach this world differently and if I can’t make space for our guest’s perspective, then why invite them?
- What have you learned from working on your show so far?
C.Lane: I’ve learned that this show…this show is beyond me. Like this show is not just an interest or a hobby, but a show like this is needed. I need for growth, but so do our viewers.
- There’s a mysterious stranger in the back row of your show, wearing a big ol’ N95 mask and a baseball cap and there’s something weirdly familiar about them, and then they come up afterwards to tell you they loved your show. In your WILDEST DREAMS, who is this mysterious stranger? (Bonus points if your mysterious stranger is an Atlanta celeb.)
Brodie: Janelle Monae. Though she’s not an Atlanta native, she moved to Atlanta to pursue her career. She’s amazing and I’ve been a fan of her mission, her intended purpose, for YEARS! But chile, if that masked individual turns out to be Luke James, then I’m gonna need everyone to leave the theatre, ASAP! lol
- Fringes are the place to really push the boundaries so we gotta ask: are you inviting your family to this show are “Hey, maybe sit this one out you guys…”
We invite all to the show. At the end of the day, it’s not about what we think and more so about what people need. If my parent comes to a night where we’re talking about sex, it is my job to figure out this discomfortand work through it, but my discomfort shouldn’t be their burden. If they knew the basis of the content and still decided to come out and support us, then who am I to tell them not to come out and support?
- We’ve asked this question every year for the past ten years or so but it hits different this year: Will your show change the world?
C.Lane: It already has. The amount of people that reach out to us after every episode, expressing their appreciation, let’s us know that our show is changing lives. We are so thankful to take on this position and provide a show that nourishes our audience in any capacity.
- Zoom meetings: dress up head to toe or Donald Duck it?
Brodie: Donald Duck was ahead of the times! To show our flattery, we imitate him. Daisy Duck too.
- We’re making an excellent Fringey Feelings playlist. Describe your show in two or three songs we can add to keep the jams flowing.
Brodie: Janelle Monae – I Like That
Chris: Dua Lipa- Levitating
Both: Kanye West – We Major
